How To Keep External Display On When Closing Macbook?

How to brand MacBook sleep when lid is closed while external monitor is connected?

I got an external monitor to utilize with my MacBook Pro (2018) a while back, and I use both monitors. When I shut the lid with the external monitor continued, the laptop simply shifts the display over to the external monitor and doesn't get to sleep.

I realize this doesn't seem to be configurable in System Preferences, but is there a manner using a terminal command or NVRAM setting to change that beliefs? I want the MacBook to sleep when the lid is airtight no matter what's continued.

This isn't exactly an answer simply anyways..
Click on the apple tree (tiptop-left) > Sleep.
I've been doing that for some time.. Non that big a hassle imo.

I've been doing this for months. Sadly, it no longer works in Large Sur xi.0.1. My steps:

  1. Press Sleep (I have a touchbar button, but Apple tree Carte > Sleep works as well)

  2. Wait for fans to stop spinning

  3. Close chapeau

  4. Watch monitors turn back on and my apple sentinel auto-unlocks the macbook (argh!)

you should be able to but close the chapeau and it should recognise the external monitor and and then wiggle your mouse and the external monitor should turn back on

That'due south not the outcome, though. I want the MacBook to become to slumber, merely having the external monitor continued causes it to stay awake.

I'grand looking for a mode to take it so that closing the hat puts information technology to sleep, just like information technology would if at that place weren't a monitor continued.

You lot don't accept to exercise any changes to the settings. But continue you MacBook continued to power source and so close the lid. Once you move your external mouse or keyboard, your external monitor should get-go working
